Obituary of Richard P. Walters, Sr.

Richard Paul Walters Sr., age 91 passed away peacefully on Wednesday March 11, 2020 at his daughter's home in North Plainfield. Born in Jersey City at the family home. Richard has resided in Watchung for 51 years. Richard proudly served in the National Guard for two years from 1948 to 1950. He later served in the Naval Reserves during the Korean Conflict for eight years from March 1, 1950 to March 1, 1958. Richard began working at Walters Machine Company, his brother's business in Jersey City but after 10 years he decided to go back to school Richard earned his bachelor's degree from Stevens Institute of Technology in mechanical engineering in 1961 and his master's in management and science in 1966. After graduating Richard started working for Western Electric in Kearny as a mechanical engineer and later transferred to AT&T in Springfield retiring in 1989 as a Senior Mechanical Engineer. During his time there, Richard was part of two major patents involving the round battery project for Bell Labs. He was also part of a team sent to Iran from December of 1975 to July of 1976 to assess the telecommunications systems for the modernization and Westernization of the country. Richard was a dedicated and active member of St. Mary's Stony Hill RC Church in Watchung, where he served as an usher for over 40 years. He was also a member of the Watchung Volunteer Fire Department. He was an avid fisherman who was a Charter Member of the Atlas Anglers in Bayonne. Most of all Richard loved to dance especially with his loving wife Veronica. You could see them gliding across the dance floor at every family event. Richard's greatest legacy was his unconditional love of his family and the fact he never met a stranger. He was a guardian, mentor and hero. His smiles and warm greetings will be missed by all. He is predeceased by his parents Albert B. Walters Von der Vogelweide and Anastasia (Geyer) Walters his siblings and their spouses: John (Jean) Walters, Helen (Arthur) Bolam, Albert (Rose) Walters, Reneta (John) McGuinn, Henry (Mary) Walters, Charles/Lindy (Harriet) Walters, Loretta (William) Hopf and a son-in-law Edward Tevis. Richard is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Veronica Helen (Waltz) Walters, children Lynne Tevis, Richard Walters Jr. and his wife Charlotte, Curtis Walters and his wife Ruth, Anastasia Van Liere, Mary Margaret Forrestall and her husband Timothy and David Walters. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren A private service will be held at Higgins Home for Funerals 752 Mountain Blvd. Watchung NJ 07069. The entombment will be at St. Stony Hill Cemetery in Watchung.
