Obituary of Jean Thomas

Jean Bartle Thomas, age 91, died on February 13, 2012, at the Center for Hope Hospice in Scotch Plains. Mrs. Thomas was a native born lifelong resident of North Plainfield. Predeceased by her husband Dr. Lewis C. Thomas in 2011, they were married for 59 years. They enjoyed raising their three boys and six grandchildren and traveling together to Alaska, Europe, Cape Cod and Florida. Jean was a 1937, graduate of North Plainfield High School. She worked for the Prudential Insurance Company in Newark for 17 years as a Secretary and later at Ciba-Geigy in Summit. She was a member of the North Plainfield Woman's Club for 40 years, a Cub Scout Den Mother, a mother of three Eagle Scouts, a member of the Road Runners Club, Learning for Life member and an active member of Wilson Memorial Union Church in Watchung where she was a member of the Women's Guild. She had a passion for swimming and swam regularly at the Scotch Plains YMCA and Brookhill Swim Club. She was a tennis fan and an avid tennis player. She enjoyed her friends and always looked forward to the "Secret Pal Party" in February. Jean was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker and friend to all who knew her. Surviving are her sons Bart Thomas, James C. Thomas and his wife Christy and Dwight N. Thomas and his wife Nanette; her six grandchildren Summer, Ryan, Jamie, Courtney, Bridget, Dwight Luke, her nephews, David Watts and William Watts and her three lifelong friends Edith Brokaw, Ethel Leffert and Fran Warren. Visitation will be from 2-4 & 7-9 on Thursday, February 16th at Higgins Home for Funeral, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung. Services will be at Wilson Memorial Union Church, Hillcrest Rd., Watchung on Friday at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains. Memorial donations may be made in Jean's memory to the North Jersey Chapter of the American Cancer Society, 20 Mercer Street, Hackensack, NJ 07601.
