Obituary of Thomas Powers

Thomas R. Powers, age 78, died on Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at Manor Care Health Services in New Providence. He was born in Elizabeth, raised in Union and lived in Berkeley Heights before moving to Watchung in 1980. Mr. Powers served in the Navy Reserves before enlisting in the United States Navy. In 1956, he founded Powers Construction Co., Inc. and built many single family homes in Chatham, Berkeley Heights and Watchung. Mr. Powers was a Communicant of the Church of the Little Flower in Berkeley Heights. He enjoyed his vacation home on Cape Cod and traveling, boating, skiing, golf, tennis and biking. He was a member of the Tri-County Boating Club and the Ocean County Ski Club. Mr. Powers is survived by his wife, Nancy Powers; his children, Susan Jankowski and her husband, Ted, Thomas Powers and his wife, Denise, James Powers and his wife, Paula and Anne Hercek and her husband, James; his sister, Lois Boyle and her husband, Jack. Tom also leaves nine grandchildren, Brooke, Thomas, Marielle, Wyatt, Julianne, Griffin, Conner, Aidan and Lyla. The family would like to send a special thank you to the staff at Manor Care in New Providence for their caring help and support. Funeral services will begin on Friday, February 17th at 8:45 am at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung followed by a 10:00 a.m. Funeral Mass at The Church of the Little Flower, Berkeley Heights. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield. Visitation will be on Thursday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm.
