Obituary of Ewald Friedrich

Ewald Friedrich,73, died on Sept 25, 2013 in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family. Born in 1939, he immigrated to the US, at the age of 10 in 1950 with his family from what was formerly known as Austria-Hungary. He went through the Elizabeth public school system graduating in 1958. In 1960, he enlisted in the Army, completing basic training at Fort Dix, NJ and Fort Knox, KY. He was assigned to Germany and served his three years of voluntary service. After the service, he joined the Carpenters Local 715 in Elizabeth and had been a member there for almost 50 years. In 1974, he was hired as the Superintendent of Public Works in his hometown of Warren and worked there for 30 years to his retirement. During his tenure as Superintendent of Public Works, he became active in the Public Works Association of NJ and served as president for two years. Always active in his community, he served 24 years on the Watchung Hills Regional High School board committee. An avid hunter, dog lover, music lover, gardener and handyman, Ewald, affectionately known as Ed, was adored by everyone and had a great passion for life. He is survived by his wife, Barbara of 53 years, daughter, Elisabeth Keimer and her husband, Robert and their two children, Nicole and Brian, and daughter, Cathryn Fernee, former husband Jon Fernee, and two children, Eric and Kyle, and his brother Joseph Friedrich.
