Obituary of Irene Batten

Bridgewater: Irene Batten, 90, passed away on Friday, March 10, 2017 at The Chelsea at Bridgewater. She was born in Syracuse, NY, raised in Plainfield, NJ, had lived for over 45 years in Martinsville before moving to Bridgewater six years ago. Mrs. Batten was a homemaker. She was a Communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church in Martinsville. Mrs. Batten was one of the founding members of the Martinsville VFW Women’s Auxiliary. She dedicated her life to the support of veterans’ groups. She was a creative seamstress who was the costume designer for the Martinsville Players Group and she had a particular talent for making individualized Halloween costumes. Mrs. Batten was a world traveler who loved to dance. She enjoyed opera and theater but her first love was always her family. Mrs. Batten is predeceased by her husband, Albert Batten, himself a Disabled American Veteran from World War II. Surviving are her children, Kathleen Dietz, Kenneth Batten, Albert Batten, Jr. and Carol Conover and her grandchildren, W. John Dietz, Elizabeth Dietz-Urosa, Katie Batten, Albert Batten, III, Christopher Batten, Thomas Conover, William Conover and Michael Conover. Also surviving are nine great-grandchildren. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 15th from 5 to 8 PM at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung. Funeral Services will begin on Thursday at 9 AM at the funeral home followed by a 10 AM Funeral Mass at Blessed Sacrament Church. Interment will be at Somerset Hills Memorial Park, Basking Ridge. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Wounded Warriors Project.org
