Dear Lian and Tony: I am totally shocked to learn the news about the loss of Alan, and I extend my deepest sympathy to you for your loss. I met Alan when I stayed at your home on my way to work for Burroughs Wellcome. He was only about 3 years old at that time. I clearly remember that he was so sweet and adorable. He had several gold fishes and a couple of small green porcelain turtles in an aquarium. He had so much fun with them. I believe in god’s care, Alan will now have complete peace and happiness in the heaven. I wish you find the strength to let this difficult time begone.

Lian and Tony... I was stunned hearing about Alan's passing. I am so sorry for you two and Amy. This is so hard to fathom. I remember fondly when AeKyong was caring for Alan at our house when Lian was working at Burroughs Wellcome. Such a fun, happy child! Alan’s suddenly leaving us caught me in shock, sadness and speechless.
I knew Tony 15 years ago when we both still worked as colleagues in Novartis. I first and, also last saw Alan at a party in Tony and Lian Feng’s house in Basking Ridge. But I felt I re-met Alan just a few days ago as I came-across his very thoughtful book called «Flowers - Philosophy for New Consciousness» as Tony asked me to help Alan’s portrait preparation.
When I read Alan’s book, I found he had very deep and honest thoughts about the reality of the world and the value of life than I do and some dimension of the thinking we may not reach. He resembled the life as flowers, for its nature and purity . Flowers are wonderful gifts of the nature, cheering the people and enriching the world. People used flowers to propose their loved ones for the happiness and now we use flowers to tribute Alan for the memory. In the world there are over 1 million types of flowers. Some blooms for as long as a few months but others just quietly and transiently for as short as a few hours. The latter is best exampled by night-blooming cereus (昙花). Cereus’ short blooming certainly bring us a unique excitement and memorable delights.
Tony and Lian-Feng, Alan never left you, he is one of the most beautiful flowers around, continuously charming you both and Amy; he is also not alone, because he is always remembered by you and accompanied by many other flowers in the nature.
Finally, I would like to conclude my words by reciting Alan’s book’s endnote in Chinese:
觉醒是意识的开花。有时你会闭上眼睛，感受宇宙在你体内绽放。觉醒是一个自然的过程。除了品尝人生的经历之外，什么都不需要做。在充满挑战的时代，请记住，你并不孤单。记得要呼吸。记住你心中埋藏了一颗神圣的花的种子。你所要做的就是让它成长。所有创造都很好。

I met Alan when we lived on the same floor in our first year of college. He was always such a warm and loving person with an infectiously kind presence. We drifted when we no longer lived near each other but every time I saw him he offered the same warmth like no time had passed. Thank you Alan for being such a wonderful presence in my life. Growing up, Alan was my best friend. From playing Halo on the XBOX to shooting off model rockets, Alan and I had so much fun together. The grin on his face was always so infectious that one couldn't help but laugh along. Even now, 16 years later, I often think of how happy his presence made me feel.
