Obituary of Annie Laura Jones

ANNIE LAURA JONES Annie Laura Jones was born in Waycross, Georgia on February 10, 1930, the daughter of Laura Jackson and Elijah Tucker. Her parents died while she was still in High School and she was raised by an aunt, Mildred Eloise Jackson. After graduating from High School she came to New York's Harlem community as an 18 year old and lived with an aunt for six months before getting a job and an apartment of her own. She then sent for her younger sister Essie Mae Gary Jenkins and put her through school. She would later meet Parker Jones (deceased) and they would be married. She had two children by this marriage; Robert Curtis Jones, born at Harlem's Sydenham Hospital and Raymond Parker Jones born at Jamaica Hospital in the borough of Queens New York City. She is survived in addition to her two sons Robert and Raymond, by two grandchildren; Candace and Ray jr. and a great grandchild Malachi. In addition, she has two living cousins on her mother's side of the family Charlotte and Thaddeus now of Atlanta, Georgia and their three children, and her sister Essie Mae and her four children of Texas, a cousin Alvin Cobb now of New York City and several others on her father's side of the family (Tucker). Annie would later be divorced and go to College to earn her LPN and subsequently her RN license in Nursing and spend the next 20 years at Mary Immaculate Hospital in Queens. Her love of people and service led her into nursing and she was a nurse on the Oncology floor for many years. Annie retired in 1991 and moved to Daytona Beach, Florida where she lived for 15 years in retirement with her second husband Ted Jones. After Ted's death in 2006 she moved in with her son Raymond in New Jersey for a year before moving into a senior citizens complex in Atlanta Georgia where she stayed for 4 years. With her Alzheimer's disease increasing her son Raymond moved her into Whispering Knoll, an assistant living facility in Edison, NJ. After suffering a stroke and unable to function on her own while in Whispering knoll she was then moved to a nursing home at Norwood Terrace in Plainfield, NJ. Through many changes and medical procedures including dialysis treatment 3 days a week and ultimately a feeding tube, on May 15, 2014, the good Lord called her home. After almost 85 years of life in a world with numerous changes Annie remained the same; pleasant, with a warm disposition and a love of her family and life in general. She always had a smile for you no matter what was going on at the time. She lived through segregation in the south to see the first African American President (although she would tell you Hillary was her girl). Much can be said of life and its longevity but if you can have a good career, enjoy over 20 years of retirement watch both of your grand children grow to an adult and a young adult and get to spend time in all three places for seniors; senior citizens apartment complex, an assistant living facility and a nursing home, you have had one heck of a life. Most of us will not but Annie did and although she will be missed, she left lessons for both her children and grand children that will last forever. We love you Mom and Grandma and God surely blessed us with your life. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 from 10-11 a.m. at Higgins Home For Funerals, 209 West 8th Street, Plainfield, NJ followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. Cremation is private.
