Obituary of Sr. Helen Miller, R.S.M.

Sister Helen Miller, (former Sister Mary Sarah) Sister of Mercy. Sister Helen Miller, 83, died peacefully on Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at McAuley Hall Health Care Center in Watchung, NJ. Sister Helen was born in Riverton, NJ, attended Camden Catholic High School where she met the Sisters of Mercy and then joined the Sisters of Mercy in 1950. Sister began her teaching in St Joseph School , North Plainfield and continued her teaching career in St. Francis School, Metuchen; Holy Spirit School, Atlantic City; Our Lady Star of the Sea School, Atlantic City; St. John School, Collingswood and St. Mary School, Bordentown. She also served as Principal in Our Lady Star of the Sea and St. Mary School, Bordentown and Administrative Assistant in St. Mary Academy, Lakewood. Her most treasured years in teaching were in Atlantic City. During her terms there she made many innovative changes. She introduced flexible teaching, team teaching and individualization of the junior high department. On the primary level she set up a non-graded reading program in grades one through three and created a learning and media center. After leaving Atlantic City she traveled to Collingswood where she implemented the concept of learning centers. The concept was so successful that she was asked to demonstrate it at the National Catholic Education Association Convention. Her love and care for each child was very evident as she sought to implement creative ideas to meet the needs of each student. She is survived by her dearly loved sister, Mary Klotz, her husband Charles, many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and Sisters of Mercy in the Mid-Atlantic Community. Visitation will take place at McAuley Hall Health Care Center, 1633 Highway 22, Watchung, NJ on Wednesday, August 20, 2014. Wake will be from 9:30 to 11:00 am, with the Welcome Home Service at 10:00 am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am.
