Obituary of Robert S. Lyons

In Loving Memory of Robert "Bob" S. Lyons

Robert “Bob” S. Lyons, a remarkable and spirited individual whose zest for life touched many, passed away peacefully at the age of 96 in his home in Martinsville on January 30, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.

Bob, a native of Plainfield, chose Martinsville sixty years ago as the perfect place to raise his family. His life was one of service, dedication, and passion. A proud veteran, Bob served in the United States Army Air Corps, the precursor to today's Air Force, during the final phase of World War II, with memorable years stationed in Bermuda.

Post-military life saw Bob embarking on a distinguished career with the Central Jersey Railroad, which later became NJ Transit. Starting as an electrical apprentice, his expertise and commitment saw him rise to a supervisory role. His profound knowledge and dedication to the railroad were so respected that he continued to be a source of wisdom and advice long after his retirement.

Bob’s enthusiasm for life was evident in his myriad of interests and hobbies. He served as a former captain of the Martinsville Volunteer Fire Department, reflecting his enduring commitment to community service. Post-retirement, he found joy and purpose in volunteering at Mane Stream, an equine therapy organization. His warm presence made him a favorite among clients, staff, and the horses.

An avid outdoorsman, Bob was an exceptional marksman, regularly enjoying clay pigeon shooting with friends well into his 90s. As an instructor for the Somerset County Fish and Game Protective Association, he not only led his junior team to the junior Olympics but also mentored several students to national records in marksmanship. His passion for history was evident in his extensive collection of Civil War artifacts and literature.

Bob's sharp mind and active lifestyle never waned, even in his advanced years. His legacy of vibrancy, kindness, and wisdom will be profoundly missed.

Bob was predeceased by his beloved wife, Pat, in 2015. His memory is cherished by his children, Lisa Turiano and her husband Bob, Robert Lyons and his wife Mel, and Keith Lyons and his wife Kristine; along with his nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His joy in meeting his 3-week-old great-grandchild, Molly, shortly before his passing, was a testament to his enduring love and presence in his family’s life.

A memorial service to celebrate Bob's extraordinary life will be held on Thursday, February 8, 2024, at 12 pm at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, NJ 07069. Family and friends are invited to visit with the family at 11:15 am prior to the start of the service.
