Obituary of Janos Szeman

Janos Szeman, age 82, passed away on Thursday, January 14, 2015 at Raritan Bay Medical Center in Perth Amboy. He was a Hungarian national who was born in Ungvar, Czechoslovakia. He did graduate work in St. Petersburg as a mural artist. He relocated to the United States in 1957 due to the Hungarian Revolution. He had lived in Martinsville since 1971. Mr. Szeman earned a Master's degree in Fine Arts. He attended Hunter College to learn English. He was a Structural Designer for P.S.&S. in Warren for 37 years. Mr. Szeman was a Communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church where he served as a Eucharistic Minister. He was a member of the Somerset County Republican Party and he worked for Gov. Christi's election campaign. He was active in the Boy Scouts and the YMCA. He loved soccer and was a referee and also coached. He belonged to the Hungarian Artist and Sculpture Association in New York. He was the past president of the Martinsville Community Center. He enjoyed painting portraits of his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Rosalie Waypa Szeman; his son, Janos Michael Szeman and his wife, Maria; his daughter, Nicole Walls and her husband, Matthew; his grandchildren, Noelle , Eva, Lisette and Matty; his sister, Maria Varga and his brother-in-law, Ted Waypa. He is also survived by his nieces, Marika and Sabrina Varga and his nephews, Julius and John Varga , Cezar Szeman and Michael Waypa. Funeral services will begin on Wednesday, January 21st 9:00 a.m. at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung followed by a 10:00 a.m. Funeral Mass at Blessed Sacrament Church. Cremation is private. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm.
