Obituary of Harry Stanley Mayer

Harry S. Mayer, Jr. 87, passed away peacefully at home in North Plainfield, NJ on Monday, October 29, 2012 after a short battle with cancer. Born on April 14, 1925, in the Richmond Hill neighborhood of Queens, NY, he was raised in Plainfield and Fanwood, NJ and then resided in North Plainfield for over 50 years. Harry was predeceased by his parents Harry Sr. and Frieda (Nelles) Mayer and his loving wife Jeanne (Cory) Mayer. He was a 1943 graduate of Fanwood Scotch Plains High School and went on to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II. Following the War, Harry had a varied work career, first serving as a police officer in Fanwood. He then held several jobs in the automotive service industry. Before retiring in 1987, Harry worked at Thul's Auto Parts, selling automotive parts for over 15 years. He was a longtime member of United Presbyterian Church in Plainfield, where he served as both a deacon and elder. He is survived by his three sons, Donald Mayer-Brown of North Plainfield, Kenneth Mayer of Goochland, VA., and William Mayer of Old Bridge, NJ and their wives Virginia Mayer-Brown, Annalise Mayer and Patricia Mayer. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren Erin, Cory, Lindsy, Sarah, Todd, Elizabeth and Andrew. A private graveside service will be held on Saturday November 10th followed by a memorial service to celebrate his life at 2 pm at United Presbyterian Church in Plainfield NJ. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Star Fish, PO Box 2882, Plainfield, NJ 07060, a food bank where Harry generously donated his time and efforts.
