Obituary of Sr. Madonna Vona, RSM
Sister Mary Madonna Vona, Sister of Mercy.
Sister Madonna, 93, died peacefully on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at McAuley Hall Health Care Center in Watchung, NJ.
Sister Madonna, one of fourteen children, was born in South Amboy, NJ. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1936.
She earned a BA degree in elementary education from Georgian Court University, Lakewood, NJ.
Her teaching assignments included St. Nicholas School, Atlantic City; St John School, Lambertville; St Joseph School, North Plainfield and Perth Amboy Catholic School System, Perth Amboy. Sister felt that during her 50 years of teaching in elementary school she was able to influence the younger children in their love for God. It was something that she treasured.
In 1991 Sister moved from education to offer her services at St Mary Parish , Perth Amboy. Later, moving to Gabriel Hall at Mount Saint Mary, she found time to do watercolor, a pastime she enjoyed immensely.
When the time came for her to move to McAuley Hall she commented "It's a joy to be a Sister of Mercy and I am grateful to have found peace in giving myself entirely to God."
She is survived by her devoted brothers Reverend Michael Vona and John Vona both of NJ, Joseph Vona of FL, a sister Frances Kosmoski of NJ and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews and Sisters of Mercy in the Mid-Atlantic Community.
Visitation will take place at McAuley Hall Health Care Center, 1633 Highway 22, Watchung, NJ on Wednesday, February 25, 2015.
Wake will be from 9:30 to 11:00 am
Welcome Home Service at 10:00 am
Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am
The mass will be concelebrated by her brother Reverend Michael Vona and her nephew Reverend David Kosmoski.
Burial will be in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield, NJ
